Job Description

At AVOMO, we’re looking for an experienced Safety Management System (SMS) Program Manager to develop and implement comprehensive safety programs for autonomous vehicle (AV) operations, ensuring the intent of AVSC, ICAO, and CFR standards and best practices for a Safety Management System (SMS) is met.

This position plays a key role in building the SMS framework by overseeing safety risk assessments, incident response, safety reporting, and training initiatives, fostering a Just Safety Culture and Reporting Culture while collaborating with internal teams, vendors, and external partners. The ideal candidate has 5+ years of proven experience implementing SMS in industries with SMS regulatory requirements, strong risk management expertise, and the ability to navigate fast-paced, technology-driven environments to drive continuous safety improvements.

Key Responsibilities

Develop & Implement SMS-Compliant Programs:

  • Design, implement, and continually enhance operational safety programs that align with SMS standards, specifically CFR 14 Part 5 and other relevant regulations.
  • Author and implement operational safety policies and procedures, ensuring SMS compliance at all levels of the organization.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with safety standards and partner-specific SMS requirements.
  • Define and track Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that measure the effectiveness of safety programs and SMS compliance.

Safety Reporting & Incident Response:

  • Lead the development and integration of tooling for the Operational Safety Concern Reporting Program for the purposes of proactively identifying and mitigating system-level hazards.
  • Manage the reporting program by intaking reports, triaging safety concerns, conducting Event Risk Classifications (ERCs), and overseeing Corrective and Preventative Actions (CAPA) through resolution, while adhering to all SLAs.
  • Manage the response and escalation of safety concerns and incidents to partners.
  • Act as one of the points of contact for internal and external safety reports and incidents by responding immediately to meet predefined service level agreements, coordinating with operations teams, escalating as necessary, and completing follow-up actions.
  • Participate in on-call rotation duties.

Training & Employee Engagement:

  • Collaborate with the Training Team to deliver engaging safety reporting and incident response training to employees at all levels.
  • Provide coaching and support to foster a culture of safety awareness and proactive reporting.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Engineering, Operations, or a related technical field.
  • Proven experience of 5+ years implementing SMS to meet regulatory requirements in a safety critical industry: Automotive, Autonomous Vehicles, Nuclear, Aviation or similar.
  • Experience leading sophisticated fast-paced safety critical initiatives impacting multiple teams and organizations, often with conflicting priorities and schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to make impactful contributions to safety at complex operational organizations to ensure compliance with SMS regulations.
  • Strong knowledge of risk management methodologies, safety performance metrics, and compliance with relevant safety regulations.
  • Experience working in the technology sector and can thrive in extremely faced-paced environments.
  • Willing to be flexible, jump in wherever needed, and work in a changing and ambiguous environment.
  • Experience in the automotive and transportation industry. Experience with autonomous vehicles preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to collaborate with various and diverse set of groups and individuals.
  • Highly organized with excellent time management skills and ability to excel in a collaborative and dynamic environment within a growing organization
  • Understanding of project management principles and proficiency in facilitating cross functional groups or activities.
